Quality Commitment

Quality is of the utmost concern, beginning at the submittals and shop drawings phase, extending to the procurement phase and continuing all the way through the balance of the project. All supporting documentation requested in the construction documents – including the product literature, samples, mockups and shop drawings – are submitted for review.

Manufactured items are reviewed from catalog cut-sheets through technical specifications. Commodities, both organic and inorganic – including soil amendments, mulches, topsoil, gravel, sand, peat and geotextile fiber fabrics – are reviewed from lab test results, sieve analyses and other related testing. Once this is accomplished, all of these items are again inspected on site to determine if the tested samples are in agreement with the project specifications or our own standards

Natural Turf

In natural turf situations, root zone components are one of the most critical elements of a successful, high-performance installation. All root zone components are subjected to FIELDS testing in accordance with the project specifications or our designers’ specifications (our standards of performance exceed project specifications in many cases). Plant materials and sod are subjected to multiple levels of inspection. Turfgrass is inspected in the sod farms.

Natural turf fields require adequate planning to ensure that the turf delivery and installation take place in time to allow sufficient grow-in and establishment prior to the start of the playing season. Unseasonable weather may require the use of growth tarps or an intensive fertilizer regimen to encourage continued growth during periods of cool temperatures prior to harvest or after the initial installation. Some turfgrass is custom grown with specific projects in mind, often containing blends of the best turf varieties tailored toward the particular sport and project location.

Often there is a strong preference for a special blended root zone mix, how the turf is to be mowed, and even particular colors and types of infield, mound and warning track mixes for baseball fields. Adherence to the high standards is critical! Our extensive expertise ensures that we achieve clients’ quality expectations when installing natural turf.

Synthetic Sports Turf

In synthetic sports turf situations, the stability and performance of crushed stone aggregate base and drainage are considered the most critical elements of a high-performance project. In these cases, our years of experience in synthetic applications in all forms of situations, coupled with strict adherence to the standards of installation by manufacturers of synthetic turf, ensure that our project installations meet or exceed all performance considerations.

Specific base material drainage rates are tailored to the climate and needs of the site, type of turf, type of sport and level of play. Sample collection and testing is performed in the procurement phase to verify which of the available products meets the specifications. Testing continues, as sample blends are developed to establish benchmark performance. Testing continues throughout delivery and installation to verify that production materials match the approved baseline sample.

Drainage systems are designed to allow for extreme weather events. Our typical base material will allow for a storm event up to 20 inches of rainfall per hour. The drainage pipes and the crushed stone base act in a storage capacity in addition to the outflow of water.

If synthetic sports turf systems are being utilized, there are additional issues that relate to the actual turf installation by either the manufacturer or its licensed agent. Most manufacturers accept our experience and capabilities as equal to their own, and we are permitted to self-perform all or part of each installation to the manufacturer’s specifications, generally in two manners:

  1. FIELDS prepares the subgrade, subdrainage, crushed aggregate base, and edge anchor curb or turf nailer boards, and the manufacturer’s approved installer installs the turf.
  2. FIELDS performs all aspects of the installation, including the subgrade, subdrainage, base, edge anchor, synthetic turf installation, and infill material placement under the supervision of the manufacturer’s representative.

Critical to the success of synthetic field installation is a full understanding of the product’s technical specifications and a clear delineation of responsibility so that the complete system functions according to the manufacturer’s performance and safety requirements, regardless of the work distribution.

Sports field construction is frequently subject to close inspection, careful scrutiny and extensive involvement by the project’s Sports Field Manager, Athletic Director, Coaching Staff and athletes. Our work stands up to their exacting requirements.
