Miller Park boasts the only fan-shaped retractable roof in North America, and is one of the few Major League Baseball parks with retractable roofs and natural grass fields. The convertible roof ensures perfect climate conditions for games, but the total or partial shade the roof provides contributed significantly to inconsistent growth in the outfield turf. The condition of the thatch layer and organic build-up between the grass and soil surface sparked concerns regarding footing, ball bounce and ball roll, and the field was scheduled for replacement after the 2008 National League Championship Series.
FIELDS removed the existing turfgrass and the organic matter layer, and installed additional USGA growing medium. We then performed specific and detailing laser grading as directed by the Milwaukee Brewers in order to meet their objectives for the project.
Prior to installing the new turf, the existing irrigation system was modified. FIELDS designed the modified system in zones in order to maintain adequate moisture levels in all areas of the warning track, whether they were in full sun or in the shade. To restore the track once the irrigation was added, we installed additional warning track material and laser graded the track.
FIELDS completed the project with the installation of the new turfgrass, and selected a special bluegrass turf grown to the desired maturity to suit the needs of this special environment. The playing surface was ready for Opening Day in the spring of 2009.
